Chair of Historic Preservation
Savannah College of Art and DesignThe Savannah College of Art and Design is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time position as Chair of the Historic Preservation Department. Candidates must have a terminal degree, or its equivalent, in Historic Preservation or a related field. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration duties within the department as well as the development and implementation of curriculum and academic standards at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate will have demonstrated professional experience in the preservation field and will teach classes related to his or her expertise in areas such as preservation technology, planning, research, restoration construction, and adaptive rehabilitation. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in materials conservation. Experience developing e-Learning courses or teaching in an online format is desirable but not required.
The Historic Preservation department offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and a Graduate Certificate. The department is situated in the School of Building Arts, which offers degrees in Architecture, Interior Design, and Urban Design. The full-time position will be on the Savannah campus, with opportunities to teach in Lacoste, France as well as with the department’s award-winning E-Learning program.

Architectural Historian/Preservation Planner

BostonThe Massachusetts Historical Commission, office of the State Historic Preservation Officer, is seeking an Architectural Historian/ Preservation Planner to work within its Technical Services Division. Job responsibilities include review of state and federal projects for effects on historic resources in compliance with state and federal legislation; review project applications for federal Investment Tax Credits and state historic rehabilitation tax credits; and the development and administration of programmatic historic building rehabilitation programs with local communities in compliance with federal historic preservation law.
Candidates should have a M.A. in Architectural History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation Studies, or a related field. Prior experience reviewing technical aspects of architectural plans and drawings is preferred. Some knowledge of Massachusetts history and architecture and familiarity with federal and state historic preservation law and regulations, the Secretary of Interior’s Standards, and the National Register of Historic Places are preferred. The Ohio Historical Society is seeking a highly experienced historic preservation professional to serve as Director of Historic Preservation & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer (see attached complete position announcement). The position reports to the Deputy Executive Director and manages all operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, including 27 staff with a $1.7 million annual operating budget.
Position Summary
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) and assume a leadership role, as a member of the executive management team, in the advancement of the organization’s strategic priorities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrate entrepreneurial leadership in developing short- and long-range plans for the OHPO, consistent with the institution’s strategic vision. Oversee the responsibilities of the state historic preservation office as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act and relevant sections of the Ohio Revised Code, with signatory authority for the SHPO. Establish and carry out an OHS standard of excellence for OHS historic preservation programs that is consistent throughout all programs and in each location. Supervise Society personnel ensuring overall compliance with OHS employment policies and procedures, defining job duties, establishing work goals, setting performance standards, evaluating performance, and recommending the hire and promotion of staff. Develop and administer the operating budget for the division. Oversee the annual Historic Preservation Fund grant, including fulfillment of the annual work plan and reports and coordinating Ohio’s participation in Annual Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. Serve as Executive Secretary to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board. Promote financial health of programs through increasing revenue generation. Cooperate with the Marketing Office on implementation of effective public relations and marketing activities. Cooperate with the Office of Institutional Advancement to identify grant opportunities; write, supervise, and/or assist in the preparation of grant applications as necessary. Pursue ways to expand institutional involvement to a variety of stakeholders and constituents. Address feedback or request from public and local communities and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the local communities. Cooperate with state offices and legislators, historic preservation organizations, academic institutions, public history organizations, and other potential institutional collaborators. Graduate degree in history, architecture, historic architecture, architectural history, archaeology or a closely related preservation field, or its equivalent in education and experience; alternately the applicant must meet the professional qualification standards in 36 CFR 61, Appendix A. An extensive working knowledge of federal and state historic preservation laws, regulations, and programs is required. A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible administration. Highly seasoned senior manager with demonstrated relevant experience in all or many of the areas of responsibility.

Tax Credit Reviewer
Virginia Department of Historic Resources (SHPO)The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is actively recruiting for a Tax Credit Reviewer to conduct reviews for the State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit and Federal Certified Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit Programs.
Responsibilities:
Provide technical assistance to resolve architectural problems; advises property owners; developers, and architects regarding appropriate rehabilitation treatments and application of the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Provides agency comments on applications according to agency and National Park Service regulations and procedures. Makes site inspections of rehabilitation projects as necessary and expedient to interpret program standards and guidelines; prepares inspection reports, written recommendations, and other documents as needed. Coordinates project reviews with other staff members and the National Park Service. Assists with the promotion of the tax credit programs through public workshops, presentations, publication, and site visits. Provides assistance with initiatives by the Office of Preservation Incentives to evaluate and improve internal processes, policies, and technology. Duties:The State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation is seeking a Physical Anthropologist Assistant.
The field assistant will work under the direction of the State Physical Anthropologist on the identification, removal and reinterment of human remains. The field assistant may also work under the direction of the State Physical Anthropologist to determine whether additional remains or archaeological deposits may be in a project area once an initial set of remains is identified, coordinate findings with the cemetery database manager, and fill out site forms. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will be responsible for notifying Tribes when human remains are determined to be Indian, or other descendants as appropriate, as well as coordinate with state agencies, local governments, and local cemeteries. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will work with Tribes and/or other descendents on the removal and reinterment of human remains when necessary or requested by a Tribe, descendent, or property owner. The assistant to the State Physical Anthropologist will assist with the administration of the grant program reimbursing property owners for the cost of the removal of human remains when the State Physical Anthropologist is unable to conduct removal activities themselves.Special Requirements
Must meet minimum qualifications for a professional archaeologist as defined in RCW 27.53.030.
Must have experience in preparing professional reports summarizing the analysis and documentation of human remains, and education and experience in the identification and treatment of human remains.
Expertise in archaeological field methods and theory.
Advanced knowledge of Section 106, RCW 27.53, RCW 27.44, RCW 68.60, SEPA, NAGPRA and all federal and state laws and regulations as they apply to archaeological properties, cemeteries and human remains.

WORK OBJECTIVES:
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking an Easement Administrator to manage the National Trust’s Easement Program, which includes over 100 easements around the country. The Easement Administrator will have the overall responsibility of administering the Easement Program, including working with the Law Department to develop or revise easement policies, evaluating new easement properties, regularly inspecting easement properties, and serving as the primary representative of the National Trust for communication with easement property owners.
Through the development and implementation of policies and procedures and the centralization of easement records, the Easement Administrator will streamline the overall management of the program. The Easement Administrator will also work closely with the National Trust regional offices, Statewide and Local Partners, and consultants to develop and implement easement monitoring agreements around the country. The Easement Administrator will work directly with the National Trust’s Law Department to address requests for changes or alterations, easement violations, and enforcement actions. Finally, the Easement Administrator will assist with public outreach activities relating to historic preservation easements, including educational programs to promote good easement stewardship practices.
DUTIES:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Inspect and photograph easement properties on a regular basis.
- Review and evaluate requests for changes or alterations to properties using the Secretary’s Standards and Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties or other standards stated in the easement document and prepare recommendations for review by the National Trust’s Easement Committee.
- Develop and update the Easement Program’s policies and procedures.
- Centralize easement records to improve accessibility and management of the Easement Program.
- Work with regional offices, statewide and local partners and consultants to develop easement monitoring/inspection agreements.
- Maintain frequent contact with easement property owners through updates to our website, e-newsletters, written correspondence, and by telephone.
- Provide technical assistance to easement property owners regarding preservation and rehabilitation of their property.
- Evaluate new properties to determine which character-defining features require protection and prepare written descriptions of properties and photographic documentation for use in administering the easement.
- Handle daily administrative functions for the Easement Program such as creating inspections reports, fielding calls from property owners, scheduling meetings of the easement committee, and making travel arrangements.
- Work directly with the National Trust’s Law Department in the acquisition of new easement properties and to address requests for changes or alterations, easement violations, and enforcement actions.
- Work with National Trust’s Law Department and other National Trust staff in providing education and technical assistance to other organizations on easement issues, particularly relating to easement stewardship practices.

Manage and supervise all personnel in the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Archaeology programs in multiple locations in Wyoming. Establish priorities, coordinate and integrate all SHPO and Archaeology program activities as part of the Division of Cultural Resources (CR), in collaboration with other CR program managers and directly with the division administrator. Represent the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources on historic preservation and archaeological issues at the state, regional and national levels. Responsible for budget management of the programs. Must comply with all pertaining state and federal directives.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Manage the SHPO and Archaeology programs in a way which reflects the interests of the State and its citizens while fulfilling statutory obligations. Provide daily oversight of all aspects of the two programs in Cheyenne and Laramie. Work closely with the State Archaeologist to oversee the Laramie staff and in maintaining the partnership with UW. Provide lead representation for the Department on historic preservation and archaeological issues at the state, regional and national levels. Establish and maintain relationships which benefit the program with the legislature, industry and the public. Establish priorities, coordinate and integrate all SHPO and Archaeology program activities as part of the Division of CR, in collaboration with other CR program managers and directly with the division administrator, to assure implementation of department goals, activities and efficiencies. Identify and implement cooperative strategies which assure that State and Federal agencies and local governments receive advice and assistance in carrying out their historic preservation and archaeological responsibilities. Oversee the management of SHPO and Archaeology budgets.
