NCSHPO Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation
The Idaho, Oregon, Washington
SHPOs (Pacific Northwest Preservation Partnership)
in the category of Partnerships With a Public Entity
in recognition of their partnership with a public entity on behalf
of a significant historic resource, preservation project, or program.
The State Historic Preservation Offices
of Idaho, Oregon and Washington have partnered with their respective
state parks departments, the National Park Service, the University
of Oregon and Oregon State University to expand opportunities
for preservation training and projects in the Pacific Northwest.
In large states with limited funding for historic preservation
activities, the partnership provides opportunities to pool resources
and expertise to accomplish far more than any individual program
could.
A major component of the partnership
is the Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School, now in it’s
11th year. Typically conducted over a period pf five weeks, the
field school provides training in historical archaeology, site
analysis and assessment of historic structures, cultural landscapes,
building conservation and rehabilitation, and preservation theory.
This mutually-beneficial relationship trains state parks employees
who are confronted daily with managing and repairing historic
resources. And by operating the Field School at a different site
each year, it continually initiates thoughtful preservation at
the site, often brining about larger, long-term preservation projects.
In addition to the annual field school,
the partnership has also resulted in intra-agency and cooperative
agreements that provide conservation training to parks staff and
result in restoration of historic sites throughout the region.
The partnership has created a dialogue
among a variety of state and federal agencies and universities
with one goal in mind – to promote and preserve the Pacific
Northwest's important historic resources.
