Data Management in SHPOffices

At the 2007 NCSHPO Annual Meeting, the SHPOs participated in a squaretable discussion on data management in SHPOffices. The abstract for the discussion:

Many times it seems there is a quagmire when dealing with the subject of information management within SHPOffices. This can be challenging for many managers and non-computer experts to navigate. Under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), each SHPO is tasked with maintaining similar information, however each state does so in a similar, yet different, manner. Sustaining information systems can be challenging in the ever-changing world of technology. The goal of this squaretable disucssion is to begin a dialogue about the status of SHPOffice information systems at a national level. A questionnaire was sent out regarding SHPO systems and the results will be presented for discussion. How does your state compare to others and how can we begin to share our knowledge about the technology and the resources? Are there ways we can capitalize on shared technology development? How should long-term funding issues be approached?

The discussion was organized by Mary Hopkins of the Wyoming SHPO and prior to the discussion, a survey was conducted to assess the current state of data management in SHPOs. Click here for the results of the survey (NOTE: the file is in pdf and it is large, so it may take some time to load).
