Colorado:
In Colorado, there was a highway context study completed in 2002. It's called Highways to the Sky: A Context & History of Colorado’ Highway System and is available on the web at: http://coloradohistory-oahp.org/publications/pubs/645.pdf
Illinois
Like Oklahoma and other Route 66 states, Illinois has a number of Route 66 resources listed on the National Register including both stretches of roadbed and Route 66 associated buildings. Beyond the Mother Road, we also have some Automobile dealerships listed, including the Motor Row Historic District in Chicago and the LaSalle Street Auto Row Historic District in Aurora, along with the individually listed Jennings Ford Automobile Dealership in Springfield. Also the Chicago Automobile Club building in Chicago is listed and the Peoria Automobile Club Association building in Peoria. We have several gas and service stations listed as well, both on and off route 66.
These can be located online at our HAARGIS site: http://www.illinoishistory.gov/PS/haargis.htm along with a number of other resources that are not NR listed and have less documentation but were picked up in surveys if you search “auto” under property name. Good luck with your research.Indiana:
- One that comes to mind is a 1990 study by David L. Baker entitled: Indianapolis-Marion County Automobile Industry, 1890-1940: Historic Context Study and Property Type Analysis. It was published by the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission.
- There's also Bill Selm's "Indianapolis Automobile Industry Thematic District Nomination," written in 1984.
Michigan:
- You should contact MotorCities Automobile National Heritage area. Their website is http://www.motorcities.org.
- Many of our automobile plants have been listed in the National Register-Piquette Plant, River Rouge, etc. Here is the link to the Piquette Plant website which includes a history http://www.tplex.org/1_heritagesites.html.
- The city of Lansing, home of Oldsmobile and REO, undertook a survey of its auto-related resources a couple of years ago. .
- Another organization that has done extensive documentation work is the US 12 Heritage Route-- the Old Chicago Road between Chicago and Detroit.
- The SHPO is currently working on the West Michigan Pike project documenting the historic resources along the first paved road in Southwest MI. It was built to bring automobile tourists to the region from Chicago. I can send you the electronic version of the transportation context for West MI Pike.
Oklahoma:
You might find the Oklahoma SHPO's work on Historic Route 66 and associated resources of help. Visit our website at www.okhistory.org/shpo/shpom.htm (select Survey/Planning and then Thematic).
Virginia:
- Here's a link to a MPD: Parkways of the National Capital Region 1913-1965 (VA, DC and MD) http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/MultipleCounty/029-5524_ParkwaysCapitalRegionMPD_1990_finalnomination.pdf
- If you are interested, we also have individual nominations on historic automobile dealerships and several other NPS parkways in Virginia (Colonial Parkway, George Washington Parkway, Skyline Drive, etc.)
Missouri:The National Park Service's History web page might be a good source of information (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/books-title.htm). They have hundreds of resources, articles and reports available in PDF for to download. I noticed an article on WWII home front resources that might be useful (http://crmjournal.cr.nps.gov/04_article_sub.cfm?issue=Volume%201%20Number%202%20Summer%202004&page=1&seq=1).
Also, the NHL program is working on an American Aviation Heritage Theme study (http://www.nps.gov/history/nhl/Themes/themes.htm). I don't think the study is complete, but the NHL may have some of the info you need or may be able to point you to good sources.

Massachusetts:The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management has produced a wonderful document: Preservation Guidelines for Municipally Owned Historic Burial Grounds and Cemeteries. Although it does not specifically include 'design guidelines,' it includes guidelines for preservation planning and general treatment recommendations for burial ground and cemetery components, including fences and gates. The document can be ordered from their website (http://www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/histland/publications.htm).
